The Ontario Ice Problem

Why Standard Gutter Guards Are Not Enough for Ontario Winters

Standard micro-mesh gutter guards solve the debris problem brilliantly — they stop leaves, seeds, and shingle granules from blocking the eavestrough. But they do nothing about the second, more destructive problem Ontario homeowners face every winter: ice.

Ontario's freeze-thaw climate — temperatures crossing 0°C dozens of times between November and March across Hamilton, Burlington, Toronto, Kitchener, and every city in between — creates the conditions for ice dams repeatedly each season. Snowmelt from a warmer roof surface runs into the cold eavestrough, refreezes, and backs up under shingles. Water intrudes into the attic and behind the fascia. Downspouts freeze solid and crack. The damage from a single ice-dam event can run $1,500 to $5,000 or more.

Heated gutter guards address both problems in one system: the micro-mesh layer stops debris year-round, and the heat cable keeps the eavestrough channel and downspout above freezing whenever temperatures drop. The result is an eavestrough that works in July and January alike.

The EavesArmour ICE System

How EavesArmour Heated Gutter Guards Work

The EavesArmour ICE system is a two-component solution installed by our certified technicians in a single visit.

Layer 1: 50-Micron Micro-Mesh Guard

The outer shell is the same aluminum micro-mesh used in our standard EavesArmour system — a 50-micron screen that blocks maple keys, pine needles, shingle grit, and even roof sand from entering the eavestrough. It sits flush with the roofline, maintains the finished appearance of the home, and carries a 40-year no-clog warranty. The mesh performs its debris-stopping function in every season, with or without the heat cable running.

Layer 2: Self-Regulating Heat Cable

A CSA-certified self-regulating heat cable runs along the inside of the eavestrough and all the way down through each downspout. Self-regulating means the cable automatically increases its heat output in colder zones and reduces it in warmer ones — so it is efficient, safe, and impossible to overheat. A thermostat controller activates the system only when ambient temperatures drop near freezing, ensuring the cable draws power only when it is actually needed. The system plugs into any standard outdoor GFCI outlet; no electrician is required for most homes.

What “Self-Regulating” Means in Practice

Traditional heat tape runs at a constant wattage regardless of conditions, wasting energy when temperatures are mild and creating hot spots where the cable overlaps. Self-regulating cable has a polymer core that changes resistance with temperature: where the cable is cold, resistance drops and output increases; where it is warm, resistance rises and the cable backs off automatically. There are no thermostats embedded in the cable itself, no moving parts, and no way for the cable to exceed a safe operating temperature. It is the same technology used in industrial pipe freeze protection and aviation de-icing systems.

The practical result for Ontario homeowners: the cable runs efficiently on the coldest nights of February and idles at low draw when mid-winter thaws push temperatures above 5°C — without any manual intervention.

Choosing the Right System

Heated vs Standard Gutter Guards — Which Is Right for Your Home?

Not every Ontario home needs heated gutter guards. The right choice depends on your roof geometry, tree exposure, and whether you've experienced ice problems in the past.

EavesArmour ICE (Heated) Is the Right Fit When:

  • You've had ice dams, icicle buildup, or water staining behind fascia boards
  • Downspouts have cracked or heaved from ice pressure in past winters
  • Your roof has a low pitch that traps cold air in the eavestrough channel
  • Your home has north-facing runs that stay shaded and freeze-prone
  • You want complete protection — debris AND ice — in a single installation
  • You're in a high-snowfall area: Hamilton escarpment, Barrie, or cottage country

EavesArmour Standard (Unheated) Is Sufficient When:

  • No history of ice dams or downspout freezing over multiple winters
  • Home has well-insulated attic that limits heat loss to the roof deck
  • Roof pitch is steep enough to shed snow before it can accumulate and melt slowly
  • South-facing eavestroughs that receive direct winter sun throughout the day
  • Budget is the primary constraint and debris is the main problem to solve
  • Rental property or cottage where electrical connection is not practical

Not sure which system is right for your home? Our technicians assess your roof geometry, attic insulation level, and ice history during a free on-site visit and recommend the appropriate system — without any pressure to upgrade. See the full gutter guard options we install across Ontario.

How Much Do Heated Gutter Guards Cost in Ontario? (2026 Prices)

The total cost of heated gutter guard installation depends on linear footage, the number of downspouts, the height and complexity of your roofline, and whether you are installing a complete system or retrofitting heat cable into an existing EavesArmour Standard installation. The ranges below cover most Ontario residential properties.

Retrofit: Heat Cable to Existing Guards

$900 – $1,800

Adding self-regulating heat cable and thermostat controller to an existing EavesArmour Standard system. No guard removal required for most installations.

Full ICE Install: Standard Home

$2,800 – $4,200

Complete EavesArmour ICE system — micro-mesh guard plus heat cable — for a typical two-storey Ontario home with 120–180 linear feet and 3–4 downspouts.

Full ICE Install: Large or Complex Home

$4,000 – $5,500+

Homes with 180+ linear feet, multiple roof levels, long downspout runs, or difficult-access eavestrough sections requiring additional staging.

Why EavesArmour ICE

What Makes EavesArmour Heated Gutter Guards Different

CSA-Certified Components

Every heat cable used in EavesArmour ICE installations is CSA-certified for Canadian electrical standards. The self-regulating design eliminates fire risk — the cable physically cannot exceed a safe operating temperature under any condition.

Automatic Thermostat Control

The included thermostat controller activates the heat cable automatically when ambient temperatures drop below 3°C and shuts it off when conditions warm. You can also connect to a smart outlet for remote control and energy monitoring from your phone.

Full Downspout Coverage

Unlike roof-only heat cables that stop at the gutter, EavesArmour ICE routes heat cable all the way through every downspout to the discharge point at grade. A frozen downspout is as damaging as a frozen eavestrough — and far more common.

No Electrician Required

The system plugs into any standard outdoor GFCI outlet. No permits, no panel upgrades, and no electrical contractor are needed for the vast majority of Ontario residential installations — which keeps total installation time to a single day.

Dual Warranty Protection

EavesArmour ICE carries a 40-year no-clog warranty on the micro-mesh guard and a 10-year warranty on the heat cable system — both fully transferable to new owners if you sell your home. No other heated gutter guard supplier in Ontario matches this combination.

Built for Canadian Winters

EavesArmour ICE has been installed and tested across Ontario climates from the Hamilton escarpment to Huntsville and Barrie. The system operates reliably at -40°C and handles the combined debris + ice load of mature-tree Ontario properties.

FAQs

Heated Gutter Guards — Common Questions

What are heated gutter guards and how do they work?+

Heated gutter guards combine a micro-mesh debris barrier with a self-regulating heat cable threaded through the gutter and downspout. The mesh stops leaves, seeds, and shingle grit from entering the eavestrough year-round. The heat cable activates automatically when temperatures drop near freezing, keeping the gutter channel and downspout clear of ice. Self-regulating cables are the key: they increase heat output where the cable is coldest and reduce it where it is warm, so they consume only the energy they need and physically cannot overheat or start a fire.

Are heated gutter guards worth it in Ontario?+

For homes that have experienced ice dams, cracked downspouts, or overflowing eavestroughs during winter, the answer is almost always yes. Ontario's freeze-thaw climate — with temperatures crossing 0°C dozens of times each winter across most of the province — creates repeated ice-dam conditions that damage fascia boards, soffits, and interior ceilings. A single ice-dam repair event can cost $1,500–$5,000. Most heated gutter guard installations pay for themselves within two to four winters compared to the repair and cleaning costs they eliminate.

How much do heated gutter guards cost in Ontario?+

Heated gutter guard installation in Ontario typically ranges from $2,800 to $5,500 for a standard two-storey home, depending on linear footage, number of downspouts, and whether you are installing from scratch or adding heat cable to an existing EavesArmour Standard system. The higher cost compared to standard gutter guards reflects the heat cable, the thermostat controller, and the additional installation time to route cable through every downspout. EavesArmour provides free, no-obligation on-site assessments with exact pricing before any work begins.

Do heated gutter guards use a lot of electricity?+

Self-regulating cable is significantly more efficient than traditional constant-wattage heat tape. A typical Ontario home running EavesArmour ICE uses 3–8 kWh per day when the cable is active — roughly the same as a clothes dryer running for one hour. The cable only draws power when the thermostat detects near-freezing temperatures, so it is inactive for most of the year. Many homeowners connect the system to a smart outlet or wall switch so they can monitor and control energy use from their phone.

Can I add heated cable to my existing gutter guards?+

If you already have EavesArmour Standard micro-mesh guards, heat cable can be retrofitted without removing the existing guard system. Our technicians route the cable through the guard channel and down every downspout, connect it to a thermostat controller, and plug the system into a standard outdoor GFCI outlet. No electrician is required for most residential retrofits. We assess compatibility during the free site visit — in rare cases where the guard profile or downspout diameter is not compatible, we will tell you upfront.
